Hosting, domains and support
The unglamorous half of the job, and the half that decides whether your site is still working in five years.
What you get
Hosting
Your site runs on a managed server I have used for years, and I am the person responsible for your site on it. Certificates, updates, and the fixing when something goes wrong.
The machines underneath are Amazon's. The people running them are in New Zealand, and so am I. There is no overseas support desk in the middle of this.
If you need to know which country your data physically sits in, say so. Some contracts and some grant funding ask, and it is a fair question. I will get you the answer in writing from the provider rather than guess at it.
Your domain name
Registered and set to auto-renew, so it doesn't lapse. If you get an email saying your domain expires in five days, forward it to me and forget about it. It's either already handled or it's a scam.
An SSL certificate
That's the padlock. Without it, browsers put "Not secure" next to your name, and people notice. It renews itself, so it cannot quietly expire on a Sunday.
Email on your own domain
you@yourbusiness.co.nz rather than a Gmail address, which matters more than people expect when you're quoting a job.
Daily backups
A snapshot of the server is taken every day and kept for seven days. If something goes wrong, the site goes back to how it was yesterday, or any day in the last week.
Security you don't have to think about
Repeated password guessing on your email is blocked automatically. Known bad networks are blocked at the server and the list is kept current. Your email is encrypted on the way in and on the way out.
None of that is something you should have to know about. It is on the page because people ask, and because it is the sort of thing that is either being done or it isn't.
$264.50 + GST a year One invoice a year, all of it included.
★★★★★
Great work on the web design. Easy to deal with, great communication and ongoing support.
What happens when something breaks
You ring me on 022 361 9457, or email elijah@elijahshort.co.nz.
I look at it. If it's quick, I fix it and there's usually no charge. If it's bigger, I tell you what's involved and what it'll cost before I do it.
I'd rather tell you something isn't worth fixing than bill you for fixing it.
Already a client?
Nothing to do here. Your hosting renews once a year and you'll get an invoice from Elijah Short Web Design Ltd.
If you need a change made to your site, email me. If your domain renewal notice looks odd, forward it to me rather than clicking anything in it.
Moving to me from someone else
This happens fairly often, and it's straightforward.
I don't need your old provider to cooperate, and you don't need to have a falling out with anyone. I'll need access to your domain name, and if the site is worth keeping I'll move it across as it is. If it isn't, we talk about a rebuild.
There's a short window during the move when email needs care. I'll walk you through it, and I'll do the switch at a time that suits, not on a Friday afternoon.

Excellent service, nothing was an issue for Elijah to sort out and made it real easy for me to transfer my IT needs over to him.
